Zhongguancun, a representative national high-tech zone, has consolidated its long list of achievements over the past three decades to become one of China's main forces for industrial development.

Xia Mingjiu, a member of the Party Leading Group at the Ministry of Science and Technology, said the park carries with it national pride. "Zhongguancun is a flag of China's innovative development and one of the most well-known and influential science and technology parks in the world."

Zhongguancun has played a demonstration role for the past 30 years, successfully piloting many practices in China's reform and opening-up, Xia said.

Yan Aoshuang, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Beijing People's Congress said that reform is the lifeblood of Zhongguancun and it has promoted new models of economic operation based upon technology. He added that the park enables the commercialization and industrialization of scientific research and technological development.

By drawing lessons from international experiences and cooperation, Zhongguancun has formed an improved policy system to promote the adaptation of science and technology breakthroughs into industry, Yan said.

Heralding the development trends of internationally advanced technologies, Zhongguancun has attracted many talented professionals from China and abroad, as well as leading enterprises to create industrial clusters from Internet Plus to artificial intelligence. The industrial scale of what is called new generation information technology, an area that is being focused on in the park, is valued at 2 trillion yuan ($288.93 billion).

Zhongguancun is also the birthplace of many emerging technologies such as flash memory, flexible displays, quantum microchips and new anti-cancer medicines. With its decades of development, the area is also internationally competitive in new materials, energy conservation and environmental protection.

According to Zhai Lixin, director of the Zhongguancun administrative committee, there are more than 90 universities and colleges and more than 400 scientific research institutes located in the area, including Peking University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

"Science and education resources are the most precious wealth of Zhongguancun, with more than 800,000 college students and more than 700 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering," Zhai said.

To date, there are more than 20,000 high-tech enterprises in Zhongguancun, including 333 listed companies.

According to official statistics, total revenue from enterprises located in zone was 5.3 trillion yuan last year.

From January to August this year, their revenue totaled 3.3 trillion yuan, an increase of 15.2 percent year-on-year.

Zhongguancun is also making efforts to promote the construction of intelligent parks and digital zones across the country.
