Products break monopoly

In the early days, hard intraocular lens were used in cataract surgeries. As they are difficult to operate with and may cause larger trauma to patients, their use had gradually been eliminated in developed countries. But in China, 30 percent of cataract surgeries still used hard lens, while the remaining soft lens were all imported from abroad.

This time, Eyebright chose to "settle the matter at one go"--- make a high-end aspheric foldable intraocular lens. The high threshold raised the company's costs and extended the research and development period. But once it succeeded, it would break the foreign monopoly and reduce medical expenses of domestic patients.

In July 2014, the company's first core product, Proming A1-UV, broke the international monopoly of soft high-end foldable intraocular lens, and became the only collapsible intraocular lens with independent intellectual property rights in China.

At present, the product is sold through more than 400 eye hospitals across China. The actual number of implants exceeds 100,000, the price of which is 30 percent to 50 percent lower than that required for use of similar international products.

Due to the entry of domestic soft crystals into the market, prices of similar foreign products fell back to meet the challenge. In this way, international cataract patients have benefited as well.

Moreover, according to the feedback from hospitals, the effect of using domestic IOL is as good as that of similar foreign products, for Chinese lens have better biocompatibility and visual quality, and are more suitable for Chinese patients.

"Chinese lens" brighten the World

In respond to the Belt and Road Initiative, the Chinese charity project "Health Express" went abroad and provided medical care to the people involved in the Initiative.

Sri Lanka became the first overseas pilot of our project. In the Kalutara Regional General Hospital in southern Sri Lanka, Chinese doctors performed rehabilitation surgeries for over 500 cataract patients in just under one month.

The most special part in this aid operation is the use of high-end IOL independently developed and manufactured by China. Prior to this, due to the lack of domestic high-end products, China usually used IOL produced in Europe and the United States.

Domestic IOL have been praised by foreign doctors and patients, and Eyebright's products have been understood and accepted by more and more foreign industries, which is also a great encouragement for them to continue their research and innovations.

In recent years, along with the Belt and Road initiative, the foldable IOL developed and produced by Eyebright have gone abroad with Chinese-aid projects and benefited more and more people in various countries and regions, including Comorin, Cameroon, Sudan, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka.
