Zhongguancun becomes a hot spot for AI development
During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period, Zhongguancun Science Park was home to 1,500 artificial intelligence-related enterprises, accounting for 28 percent of China's total. The area has become an AI industry cluster with global influence.
In the past five years of technological innovation, many companies such as Baidu, Megvii and First-Class Technology have successively open-sourced their deep learning frameworks.
The number of developers for Baidu's PaddlePaddle platform has reached 2.65 million. Based on more than 340,000 models, the platform has served more than 100,000 companies and involves the participation of municipalities and various fields.
In March 2020, Megvii announced its open-source platform MegEngine and the core deep learning framework of Brain++, which is named "Tianyuan."
Based on self-developed AI technology, Megvii will support 1,000 traditional enterprises to realize intelligent transformation, promote the implementation of 10,000 AI long-tail algorithms, and cultivate 10,000 AI talents who can complete algorithm production based on the Brain++ platform.
According to statistics, in Zhongguancun Science Park's AI field, the total number of core industry talents has reached about 40,000, accounting for 60 percent of the country's total. Also, the park is responsible for more than 12,000 valid patents, accounting for 23 percent of the country.
The AI intelligent chip "Tianjic" was developed by Shi Luping, the director of the Research Center for Brain-Inspired Computing Research of Tsinghua University, and makes driverless bicycles a reality.
In August 2019, this research was published on the cover of Nature magazine. It was the first time Nature published a Chinese research paper in the two significant areas of chips and AI.
Cambricon entered the terminal market with mobile phone AI chips. As of June 30, 2020, the company had applied for 1,929 patents, and its total number of authorized patents amounted to 151.
As an automotive smart chip company based on deep learning technology, Horizon has achieved mass production of automotive-grade smart chips. It has formed a complete product layout covering "smart driving, smart cockpit" chip solutions from L2 to L3.
The AI pneumonia intelligent auxiliary screening and pandemic monitoring system developed by InferVision can quickly assist doctors in giving diagnostic reports and screen for suspected pneumonia patients. "CT scan + AI assistance" can promptly identify asymptomatic infections and patients experiencing early symptoms.
By the end of June 2020, with the help of financing, 32 unicorn companies in the field of AI had been born in the Zhongguancun Science Park, accounting for more than 50 percent of China's total.
Among them, seven artificial intelligence companies were included on the CB Insights 2020 global AI unicorn company list, accounting for 64 percent of the companies selected in the country.
In 2020, Zhongguancun's AI-related output value reached 186 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.8 percent.
Compared with 2016, the output value has more than doubled. During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period, the average annual compound growth rate reached 19.4 percent. The rapid growth of Zhongguancun's AI industry demonstrates its vast development potential.
