Construction of Beijing International Science and Technology Innovation Center achieves new leap in 2022

In 2022, Beijing's R&D funding intensity remained above 6 percent, and R&D expenditure as a proportion of regional GDP was stable at the forefront of the country. The transaction volume of technology contracts reached 794.75 billion yuan ($115.87 billion), an increase of 13.4 percent compared to the previous year. The number of newly established technology-based enterprises in the city exceeded 100,000 for the first time, an increase of 12.21 percent year-on-year. The total revenue of enterprises in the Zhongguancun demonstration zone is expected to exceed 8.6 trillion yuan.

In 2022, the construction of the Beijing International Science and Technology Innovation Center achieved significant results, effectively supporting the high-quality development of the capital and the construction of a world science and technology power. In 2022, Beijing ranked third in the world's top 100 science and technology clusters released by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the "2022 Global Innovation Center Index" published by the Nature Group, indicating that Beijing has entered the forefront of global innovation cities.

Beijing focuses on original innovation from "0 to 1" and tackling key core technologies. A number of world-leading original scientific and technological achievements have emerged. For example, in the field of quantum information, the "Tiangong" quantum direct communication prototype was developed, creating a world record of 100 kilometers in direct quantum communication distance. 

Beijing also issued an implementation plan for tackling key core technologies in the city, published more than 150 lists, and built the country's first 8-inch silicon light production process line. Over 200 new technologies were applied in the Beijing Winter Olympics, making science and technology a highlight of the games.

Beijing efficiently promotes pilot trials and reform of the science and technology system and mechanism, further creating a first-class innovation ecosystem. It has launched a number of breakthrough policies to strengthen enterprise financial and tax support, technology transfer, and technology finance, and has taken the lead in implementing reform measures such as using technology results first and paying later.

As of the end of 2022, there were 28,200 national high-tech enterprises in the city, achieving a counter-trend growth. The number of national science and technology small and medium-sized enterprises in the country doubled to 15,500. In 2022, 61 new listed companies were added, totaling 780, with 102 unicorn companies and 143 potential unicorn companies.
